Storage system [FOM NAME] ([IP ADDRESS]) did not join the management group [MANAGEMENT GROUP NAME].

I ran into this error recently while trying to add an HP LeftHand Failover Manager (running on Hyper-V) to a management group with two HP LeftHand VSAs (running on VMware ESXi 5.1). We were using SAN iQ 10.5.
I tried blowing the FOM away multiple times and reinstalling from scratch but this did not help. I ended up calling HP and this is a known issue that they are working on. There is no patch yet but there is a workaround.
It involved HP doing an SSH connection to the IP of the Failover Manager. We used PuTTY. There were two stages to the authentication. First HP logged in with the root credentials (the password for root was “sawtooth”). Then they were prompted for a challenge-response password, which I am told is based on the Support Key (MAC address) you first see when you make the SSH connection. From what I understood, HP used some kind of super-secret key generator that took into account that Support Key.
Reportedly that key-gen is hidden in a bunker thousands of feet underground and is protected by dolphins with lasers and genetically-enhanced monkey soldiers with bazookas. So, unfortunately, you will still need HP’s assistance to get into the FOM with PuTTY.
From there HP entered some commands at blazing super-hero speed. I believe one of them was HYDRA. Either way, they were in and out faster than a speeding bullet.
As soon as that change was made we were able to join the FOM to the Management Group without any further errors.
I hope this helps, even if this does just send you to HP Support. But this way you will know what to ask them to do to fix it. Just say these code words to your HP support representative, “bunker, laser-dolphins, a monkey with a bazooka” and they will know exactly what to do.
