I have always been a big fan of dark mode for any application as I spend more hours than I care to admit at my computer, so eye strain is always a concern.

Dark mode lets us protect our eyeballs from the harsh glare of a white screen, and it may just conserve a little more battery life on our mobile devices.

The articles below are a compilation of tutorials with easy to follow steps on setting a dark theme in your favorite app.

Set your time zone to follow your location

If you travel a lot with a laptop you may find yourself working in many different time zones. The challenge is that your laptop will display the incorrect time. This can make it particularly challenging when scheduling or attending meetings.

Rather than manually updating your time as you step foot into each new geography, one solution is to configure your time settings to update based on your location. This process is quite simple.

Let’s get started!

Note: This solution requires Windows 10

Configure Automatic Time Zone

Adjust Date Time in Windows 10

From your Windows 10 desktop, right click on the time in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen.

From the context menu select Adjust Date/Time.

From the Date & Time settings window flip the toggle under Set Time Zone Automatically to the On position.

Your time zone (and time) will update automatically based on your location in the world.

You will also notice that once you configured your PC to use an automatic time zone, all other manual zone settings, such as the drop-down box to set the time zone are now grayed out.

Separate email message counts on Windows Phone 10 lock screen

The notification area of the Windows Phone 10 lock screen is priceless. From an email workflow, the benefit of the lock screen is to quickly see if any new messages have come in. This is especially useful as it saves you time from keying in your passcode and checking your account for new messages.

Windows Phone 10 Lock Screen Notifications A

If you are like me you may have multiple email accounts on your Windows phone. Like me, you may also prefer to track how many new messages each email account has received on your lock screen. By default Windows Phone isn’t configured this way. Rather it tells you the aggregate number of all email messages across all accounts in a single notification. In the picture above the number two is actually two email accounts that have received one message each. This may be good for some but when I have both work and personal email accounts on my phone I want to know which account has the new message to determine if it needs immediate attention.

In this guide, we show how to create a separate message count on your lock screen for two email accounts. In our example, one account will be a work account on Exchange and the other will be a personal account on Outlook.com.

Let’s get started!

Display file extensions in Windows 10

A file extension is the string of characters that follows the period in a file name. For example, Finances.xlsx would indicate that the file is formatted in Excel 2007 or later. By default newer versions of Windows hide the extension of known file types. This isn’t a big deal for Excel Workbooks as the file icon is universally known. However, what happens when a file has a fairly generic or lesser-known icon? What happens when two file types possess very similar icons but provide different functions. For example, an OST versus a PST. Hard to guess which one is which by sight alone.

OST vs PST

We wouldn’t want to accidentally manipulate the wrong file type. Deleting an OST cache file is no big deal. Accidentally deleting a PST can result in data loss. One possibility is right-clicking and checking the properties of the file. But if you are working with dozens of files it might be easier to display the file extensions in Windows Explorer.

To show file extensions in Windows 10 is a relatively straightforward task. The process is the same with Windows 8.

From Windows Explorer click View.

Folder Options View

Select Options >> Change folder and search options.

Folder Options View B

Click View tab. Deselect Hide extensions for known file types. Click Ok.

Folder Options View D

You are all set!

Questions to ask Cortana

With the Windows 10 keynote announcing that Cortana will be coming to the PC, we thought it would be really awesome to figure out all the fun things you can ask her.

Many of these are well documented around the web. Although, we found a few ourselves. Such as asking Cortana the famous Monty Python line, “What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?” or “Rock, Paper, Scissors”. At least, we can’t find anyone else that has discovered those yet.

Some questions are funny. Some questions are geeky. And some, just outright creepy.

We didn’t want to show her responses. That’s for you to enjoy. Besides, who likes spoilers anyway? (Okay, just one then. Look up.)

Let us know if we missed any good ones. Our community recommended section is growing like crazy! We are up over 160 questions to ask Cortana now. Plus, which one is your favorite?

Found any good questions to ask Alexa? Let us know by dropping a comment on the sister blog post 131 funny, geeky and creepy questions to ask Alexa.

(Check out the credits at the bottom for a list of our sources.)

Disable Server Manager automatic launch

Do you find the automatic launch of the Server Manager a pest?

I do.

I admit it is a great tool. But, I rarely use it.

I spend most of my time knee-deep in Exchange consoles. That’s my focus. So, when I log in to a server to do something real quick that extra delay of launching and closing the Server Manager is a nuisance.

Thankfully, Microsoft lets you disable this.

Disable Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration

If you have used Windows Server products for some time, then you have probably run into Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration.

It’s that pesky feature that Content Blocks any site not in your Trusted Zone.

Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration Content Block

One workaround is to simply add every site that you trust. This is the preferred Microsoft way to allow access. When this dialog box appears, click the Add button.

Internet Explorer Trusted Sites Add

The Add this website field should already be populated with the site you are trying to access. Simply click the Add button, followed by Close.

The page will reload with the website you wish to trust.

Now, this can become quite tedious.

We could disable Enhanced Security Configuration altogether.
