While this isn’t exactly groundbreaking stuff I thought it might serve as a nice refresher to those that dabble in the Cisco CLI. These are a few commands you can never do without.
no logging console
Ever been working in the Cisco CLI and all of a sudden you get a status message right in the middle of that long command you were typing? Annoying huh? Well, this command above will disable those pesky notifications for you. It disables logging from being delivered to your current console session.
no ip domain lookup
Ever mistype a command and then Cisco decides it must be a hostname and forces you to wait while it does DNS lookup? Gosh, that is infinitely more irritating than what the last command solves. As you might have guessed this command stops Cisco from doing DNS queries when it doesn’t recognize a command.
do
So what’s this one all about? Have you ever tried to do a SHOW RUN, only for Cisco to go “Eh?”. Cisco is kind of picky where you initiate that command. But sometimes it is just not practical to jump between configuration modes to verify your changes. So try a “Do Show Run” next time. This command forces Cisco to do what you want and executes a show run in any CLI mode. Similarly, you can also use this with other commands such as DO WRITE MEM.
