Ever run into this error? You may see it when performing a cumulative update. I ran across it when upgrading Exchange 2013 to CU7.
Error: The Windows component RSAT-Clustering-CmdInterface isn’t installed on this computer and needs to be installed before Exchange Setup can begin.
There are a couple of ways to resolve this error; PowerShell or GUI. Let’s explore both.
Give me pictures!
- Open Server Manager.
- Click Manage in the top right.
- Select Add Roles and Features.
- On the Before You Begin page click Next.
- On the Installation Type page keep the default settings and click Next.
- On the Server Selection page keep the default settings and click Next.
- On the Server Roles page, make no changes and click Next.
- On the Features page:
- Expand Remote Server Administration Tools.
- Expand Feature Administration Tools.
- Expand Failover Clustering Tools.
- Select Failover Cluster Command Interface.
- Click Next.
- Click Install.
- Click Close.
- All done! Now retry your upgrade.

Prefer PowerShell over GUI? Here is the command to achieve the same result. Open Windows PowerShell and run the following command. It will take a few moments to complete.
C:\> Install-WindowsFeature RSAT-Clustering-CmdInterface
If you receive an output like the one below you are all set. Now you can retry your Exchange upgrade.
