The Exchange Team has announced Cumulative Update 10.
As always, test these updates in a lab first!
It doesn’t have to be anything elaborate. In fact, I used to do a lot of testing from a Windows 8.1 laptop where I had Hyper-V installed. My laptop ran 3 VMs–Exchange 2010, 2013 and a DC. Hyper-V comes included with Windows 8.
Enough about labs! What are these updates and where can I get them?
The updates are as follows:
Exchange Server 2013 Cumulative Update 10
UM Language Packs for Cumulative Update 10
Exchange Server 2010 SP3 Update Rollup 11
So what’s new?
This update is a culmination of bug fixes and feature tweaks. Most notably it includes official coexistence support for Exchange 2016.
CU10 addresses an important Security Bulletin documented here that affects Outlook Web App.
Schema Updates Needed
If upgrading from Cumulative Update 7-9 to Cumulative Update 10, then there are no schema changes. However, if migrating from an earlier update you will need to perform a schema update. Microsoft documents that update process here. For a quick reference on schema and build versions check here.
Microsoft does state that /PrepareAD needs to be run to account for some RBAC definition changes. Although I can’t find any additional documentation on what those changes are. I wonder if it includes my findings in this earlier post; RBAC hides the Office 365 Mailbox creation link.
Any insight into future Cumulative Updates?
None as of yet. But it is likely it will not see any new features as these are all shored up for Exchange 2016. In fact, in our next quarterly update, we may see CU1 for 2016.
More info on that here from Microsoft’s Greg Taylor. Check the 2:15 min mark. In CU1 we expect to see improvements to search as it will be able to index from passive database copies, reducing network utilization by up to 40%.
Required for hybrid
Microsoft requires that anyone in a hybrid environment be up to date.
Exchange 2007 & 2010
With Exchange 2010 in Extended Support we only saw a single, yet important, fix for it. You can read more about Update Rollup 11 here.
Exchange 2007 has not received any updates this quarter. Exchange 2007 cannot coexist with Exchange 2016.
