V-79-57344-38273 – Final error: 0xe0009581 – Cannot get the virtual machine XML information.

This error can be caused by a number of problems but in my case, it was a very simple fix and, it may be for you too. This error occurred after I renamed one of my virtual machines. However, selections for both the new name and the old name still existed in the Backup Exec job. These selections did not show in the GUI. To fix this issue I had to remove the old names from the Backup Details tab. This is the text-based representation of the Backup Selections.

Active Directory operation failed on YOURDC.YOURDOMAIN.LOCAL. This error is not retriable. Additional information: Insufficient access rights to perform the operation.

If you are trying to move a mailbox from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 and you receive an error like the one above then you may need to change some permissions on the user you are trying to move. The process is very quick and easy.

Block spambots on compromised PCs

If you have ever been blacklisted for sending spam there is a good chance the source of those emails was not your mail server but a compromised computer inside your network. So, how do you combat this? Well, the easiest way is to create access lists on your firewall to only permit your mail server to send out on port 25 (SMTP). For a Cisco ASA, this can be easily accomplished with 4 lines of code.

V-79-10000-11226 – VSS Snapshot error. The Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) snapshot provider selected returned: “Unexpected provider error”.

I was receiving this error in Backup Exec 2010 R3 while trying to back up a virtualized Exchange 2010 server. This error seemed a little odd, so first I ran VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS from the command prompt  I verified all my writers were listed as “Stable” and all reported “No Errors”. I then ran VSSADMIN LIST PROVIDERS and immediately identified my problem.

451 5.7.3 Cannot achieve Exchange Server authentication

451 5.7.3 Cannot achieve Exchange Server authentication

I ran into this error recently while trying to migrate from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010. I had my Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2010 mailbox servers in coexistence and had successfully migrated a pilot group of users to the new server. Mail flow was still be directed through the Exchange 2003 server, although I did have a Send Connector on the 2010 server.

Users on both the 2003 and 2010 servers could send and receive mail externally. Users on the 2003 server could send messages to users on the 2010 server. However, users on the 2010 server could not send message back to the 2003 server. The queues would just fill up and 2010 users would receive a delivered delayed message. The error in the message queue was the one mentioned above.

The fix was two-part for me.
