Previous: How to add space to an HP StoreVirtual Virtual SAN Appliance – PART I

In our previous article, we got a lot accomplished.

  • We added hard drives to both of our servers.
  • We prepared our existing virtual environment for maintenance.
  • We then booted into HP Intelligent Provisioning and created a logical RAID 5 array.
  • We created an exclusive datastore in VCenter for the VSAs.
  • We added all that datastore space as virtual disks to the VSA virtual machines.

We are now ready for these new disks to be provisioned in the HP Management Console. Part II leads off with Step 6.

How to add space to an HP StoreVirtual Virtual SAN Appliance – PART I

An HP Virtual SAN Appliance is a great way to take existing local storage from multiple physical servers and combine them into a Virtual SAN. A Virtual SAN is a great way to get all the benefits of a traditional SAN, but at a fraction of the cost. In essence, the SAN is entirely software-based. The Virtual SAN Appliances (VSAs) that make up the SAN can be hosted either on VMware ESXi or Microsoft Hyper-V.

This particular article will focus on how to increase the storage space on a Virtual SAN Appliance that is already in production. It will focus specifically on a storage appliance hosted on VMware. In our scenario we will have two Virtual SAN Appliances, each running on VMware ESXi 5.1 with HP ProLiant Gen8 hardware. A Fail-Over Manager (FOM) will also exist and its sole purpose is to act as a tie-breaker during elections.

Microsoft makes a mistake with Windows 8.1

‘What’s this?’ you may ask, ‘Microsoft made a mistake with Windows 8.1?’.

Yes, unfortunately, they did.

And while not apparent to most users, it is something that will affect many network administrators, desktop support technicians and technology consultants alike.

Those that know me may also wonder why I have posted such a powerful heading like the one above. My coworkers often accuse me of drinking the Microsoft Kool-Aid. With my PC running Windows 8.1, with Internet Explorer 11 as my default browser, my Bing.com homepage, Bing Bar and Bing Desktop apps, my Windows Phone and my Xbox (oh and the fact I want to buy a car with Sync), I honestly don’t know where they get it from.

But back to the topic at hand. What is this mistake Microsoft made with Windows 8.1 and how that will affect IT professionals?

Backup Exec will not perform an Inventory Job

So, I ran into this issue today where a customer running Backup Exec 12.5 could not perform an Inventory Job against a single-loader tape drive. They had performed all the usual steps, such as power-cycling the library and then power-cycling the server, but still no dice. What made matters even more strange was that they could actually perform regular backups. They just couldn’t perform any tape operations. After a quick check with HP Tape Tools, confirming that everything hardware-wise was good, we quickly set our sights back on the software side. The fix was very simple. See below:

The beta program for Backup Exec 2012 Release 2 has been announced. ‘Okay, but what is changing in Release 2?’ you might say. Well, quite a lot actually. And, from what I can see its all good!

As many of you are already aware Symantec Backup Exec 2012 was received with mixed reviews. Some loved all the new features, others liked or disliked the new GUI, and lastly, some didn’t care about the new Server-Centric model that had replaced the Job-Centric model from previous versions. Personally, I quite liked the product but I did see some oversights that I had described in some previous articles. But those were never a deal-breaker for me. I recommend reading these posts for a fuller picture.

  • Backup Exec To Include Job-Based Backups Maybe: PART DEUX

In retrospect I guess I could have called this article ‘Backup Exec To Include Job-Based Backups Maybe: PART TROIS’, but hey call me a rebel (and that is a lot of words to write). Blog headings aside here is the list of cool features changing in Release 2.
