Presence missing in Outlook after Teams Only switch

If you have recently made the switch from Skype to Teams Only mode in Office 365, you may have lost your presence data in Outlook.

Skype and Teams share their presence data with Outlook. When viewing or composing an email in Outlook you can also see the presence of anyone internal in your organization and any external users you have federated presence data with. That presence date will look like the screenshot below.

Presence data from Teams and Skype in Microsoft Outlook

In the example above, I have a green checkmark which identifies my presence as available. This could also be yellow to show away, red to show busy and, other presences such as do-not-disturb, out of office, or, unknown. This presence data can show up in other Office applications as well, such as Microsoft Word when co-authoring a document in real-time.

If you have recently switched to Teams-Only mode and there is no presence circle at all, then you may need to reconfigure your Teams client to share presence data. Below is an example of what that will look like.

Note: Presence data will also be missing if your Microsoft Teams client is not running.

Fixing frequent blank screens in Outlook for iOS & Android

When I first started using Outlook for Android it was running great. I use it to check three different email accounts–two accounts in Office 365 and one Outlook.com.

However, as the months went by the app seemed to get slower and slower, with more frequent blank screens. These blank screens would appear most often when I would try to pull up my folder list (pictured below)

Outlook for Android & iOS Slow Folder Opening

Although it would happen at other times as well. Such as trying to open an email (pictured below).

Outlook for Android & iOS Slow Email Opening

This delay would generally last a few seconds. But sometimes it could take as long as 10 seconds for the folder list or email to appear. Certainly enough to hinder productivity in the app.

Unable to delete newly created calendar in Outlook on the Web (OWA)

If you created a new calendar in Outlook on the Web you may notice the option to delete it might be missing. I see this question come up quite a lot so I figured it was time to address it with a blog post.

The issue occurs when a user creates a calendar in Outlook on the Web. Often the calendar is created in error because the user was trying to add a shared calendar instead. When the user right-clicks the calendar they will see no option to delete.

We have an example of this in the screenshot below. The user has created a calendar titled, “My New Calendar”. However, when they right-click there is no option to delete.

Outlook has stopped working while launching

When launching Outlook you may receive the following error.

Microsoft Outlook has stopped working

Microsoft Outlook has stopped working.

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

How to fix Outlook has stopped working?

This error could occur for a number of different reasons. The possible causes we cover in this article include:

  • Disable the add-ins
  • Corrupt OST
  • Corrupt PST
  • Check the Event Viewer
  • Create a new Outlook profile
  • Repair Office

Disable the Add-ins

One possibility–and always the first thing to check–is that an Outlook add-in could be causing the error. To determine if this is the root cause open outlook in Safe Mode.

To do this, hold the CTRL-key on your keyboard while clicking the Outlook icon. You will receive a prompt asking whether you want to open Outlook in safe mode. Click Yes.

Outlook will then launch with all add-ins disabled. Furthermore, the reading pane and any toolbar customization will be disabled. You can then navigate to File >> Options.

Outlook 2013 options

Once in options select Add-Ins. From here you can see all add-ins that load when Outlook is opened in normal mode. To disable an add-in click the Go… button.

From the Add-Ins dialog, you can deselect an add-in to disable it. Click Ok then restart Outlook. You can repeat this process until you find the add-in preventing Outlook from starting

While working on a Cutover migration for Office 365 I ran into an error with the default search folders in Outlook. The data had migrated successfully. The Outlook profiles were recreated. Mail was flowing. However, when clicking on the Unread Mail folder it resulted in the following error.

'Unread Mail' - The attempted operation failed. An object could not be found.

This same error occurred when clicking on other search folders; such as Categorized Mail, or, Large Mail.

Outlook Favorites

Thankfully the fix was incredibly simple.
