Slow Document Editing when using SharePoint Sync

Recently I ran into an issue where editing a Word document was painfully slow. Every time I typed a letter it was followed by an unbearable lag. Typing a sentence would sputter in dribs and drabs. This was not going to work.

SharePoint Online Document Library Sync

The document in question was stored in SharePoint Online. I was using the Sync feature for easy access from my local computer.

The fix was actually quite simple.

Fix Slow Document Editing

Check the bottom-right of your Word document. If you see something that says Updates Available click it. If successful the Updates Available notice will disappear and Word will perform at its normal speed.

If you hover over Updates Available before you click it, you will see a description of what is actually going on.

RBAC hides the Office 365 Mailbox creation link

If you have configured Exchange 2013 in hybrid mode then you have probably noticed the appearance of this link. It’s the Office 365 Mailbox creation link.

New Office 365 Mailbox link

However, if you have implemented RBAC this link may not show when you’d expect it to.

I ran into this recently when upgrading an Exchange 2010 hybrid environment to 2013. Previously the client had implemented RBAC where members of the helpdesk team were added to the Recipient Management group. In 2010 this allowed the helpdesk team to create and manage mail recipients; both on-premise and in the cloud. However, when this group attempted to use the 2013 management tools the Office 365 Mailbox link was absent.

After some digging–plus some trial and error–we quickly found an oddity. The short answer–it’s all based around one missing role entry. To see that link you need access to the Get-RemoteDomain command. Members of Recipient Management do not have this.

I was helping a fellow expert on Experts-Exchange recently. They were needing help with a PowerShell script. The task was to allow a user account Full Mailbox Access overall members that belonged to a certain distribution group.  After a little reworking of PowerShell, this is what we came up with; and it worked!

Multiple password prompts when accessing files on SharePoint

I ran into a situation recently where users kept getting multiple passwords prompts when trying to access documents off SharePoint. It didn’t matter what kind of document the user was trying to open. Often they would be prompted as many as 2 or 3 times before the document would open and, it never made a difference if they checked to Remember Password or not. It was incredibly aggravating for my users and needed immediate attention.

Luckily the fix was quite simple

SharePoint Explorer View allows you to view your SharePoint Document Library in a Windows Explorer View. This view is nice for uploading dozens of files at once, very quickly and very easily.

Entering SharePoint Explorer View

However, the performance of your Explorer View may be severely impacted by a single checkbox. If you have ever tried to use Explorer View and browsing between the folders is incredibly slow then here is how you fix it. The difference is night and day.

I ran into a strange issue recently where I could not get a Konica Minolta Bizhub multifunction network scanner to send scans to email using office 365.

After some useful posts on the Microsoft Office 365 Community Forums and a lot of trial and error, I discovered what I needed to do to make this particular scanner relay mail through Office 365.
